Modern Cyanotype - the Ware Process

The Ware Cyanotype Process in brief.

The Ware Cyanotype will generally give a more deep dark and intense blue than the standard cyanotype. As with all of the handcoated processes, personal variables and each printers skill will give differeing results.

The Ware process is a one solution process. There is no A and B solutions to mix as there is in the standard cyanotype process.

The process is simple.

1.) Coat the paper with a brush or glass rod. After the margins of the print have been filled in, the print should be wet but not dripping wet.
1 drop of Tween 20(tm) can be used to help the paper absorb the material. The Tween will often eliminate emulsion bleed during development.
1 drop of the citric acid solution can be added to help clearing.
2.) Air dry, or dry with a hair dryer or in the stream of a fan until dry.
3.) Place full size negative in contact with the coated side of the paper. This can be done in a traditional photographic printing frame or under a sheet of glass.
4.) Print until the darkest areas of the print are reversing and getting lighter. Making a test strip is the best way to determine exposures.
5.) Wash in clear running water for several minutes.
6.) The image will only come up as it dries and oxidizes. If you wish to see the print as it would be when dried, then add 50 ml of houshold strength hydrogen peroxide to a liter of water and submerge the print in this for a few seconds. This will make the full blue image emerge.
7.) Blot dry and finish drying on blotters or screens.
