Gold Toning POP

I should warn you that the that weights and measures are not only in ounces and fluid ounces but also Grains,Drachms, and Minims. Quite quaint really, but more romantic than the boring old metric system!!
One of these days, I'll do the conversions -- or if any one out there does and would like to share it, send it to me and I'll repost it here in metric. Dick

Part A :- Gold Chloride (one percent soln).
Part B :- Amonium Sulphicyanide (one percent soln).

To make toning bath dilute Parts A and B one to nine by volume with water.

Colour Sulphocyanide (diluted) Gold (diluted)

Red 12 minims 2 drachms 0 minims
Reddish Brown 17 " 2 " 50 "
Brown 25 " 4 " 0 "
Warm Purple Brown 34 " 5 " 40 "
Cold Purple Brown 42 " 7 " 0 "
Cold Purple Black 84 " 14 " 0 "

For Carmine Tones

Ammonium Sulphocyanide 75 grains
Pot. Iodide 8 - 20 grains
Gold Chloride 4 grains
Water 35 fld. ozs. (Imperial!)

For Black Tones (1)

Gold Chloride 2 grains
Powdered Chalk 100 grains
Chloride of Lime 2 grains
Water 16 fld. ozs " "

For Black Tones (2)
Sodium Acetate 60 grains
Sodium Bicarbonate 10 grains
Sodium Chloride 30 grains
Water 15 fld. ozs. " "

Add to the above

Gold Chloride 4 grains " "
Uranium Nitrate 5 grains

According to the formulary these two latter items to be pre-dissolved in 20 fld. ozs. of water

Stock Toning Bath Which Keeps

Heat 1.5 fld. ozs. distilled water to 100 deg. F, add 15 grains gold
chloride and 150 grains strontium chloride, and heat to nearly boiling.
Heat also 1.5 fld. ozs. distilled water and 40 grains potassium
sulphocyanide to nearly boiling, and add gold solution in 2 drachm lots,
with stirring. Allow to cool and make up to 30 drachms

To make bath add 4 - 8 ozs of water to 1 drachm of the stock solution

To Arrest Gold Toning :- Sodium Sulphite 50 grains, water 10 fld. ozs.

Brush Toning

Soln. A. Ammonium Sulphocyanide ten percent soln

I would love to see a collection of old POP toner formulas!

Here we go! I should warn you David that the that weights and measures are not only in ounces and fluid ounces but also Grains,Drachms, and Minims. Quite quaint really, but more romantic than the boring old metric system!!

GELATINE P.O.P. TONING

water.

To make bath add 4 - 8 ozs of water to 1 drachm of the stock solution

To Arrest Gold Toning :- Sodium Sulphite 50 grains, water 10 fld. ozs.

Brush Toning
Soln. A. Ammonium Sulphocyanide ten percent soln
Soln. B. Sodium Phosphate ten percent soln
Soln. C. A saturated Borax soln
Soln. D. Gold Chloride one grain per drachm

Take soln A, 70 minims add ater to make 5 drachms; then add little by
little, soln D., one drachm; and next soln B., 30 minims: soln C., 80
minims.

Bath contains approx. sulphocyanide 7 grains, gold chloride 1 grain,
phosphate 5 grains, borax 7 grains in each fld. oz.

Apply with sort camel hair mop to dry print, tones in two minutes.

Platinum Toning (for matt prints)
(a). Potassium Chloroplatinite 3 grains
Sodium Chloride 50 grains
Citric Acid 50 grains
Water 20 fld. ozs.

(b). Potassium Chloroplatinite 2 grains
Lactic Acid 120 grains
Water 12 fld. ozs.

(c). Potassium Chloroplatinite 2 grains
Phosphoric Acid (S.G. 1.12) 3 drachms
Water 10 fld. ozs.

Immerse dry prints in a ten percent salt bath for five minutes, wash and
tone in above.

To Arrest Platinum Toning:- Sodium Carbonate (cryst.) 10 grains, Water 1fld. oz.

Develope, needing no toning (matt prints)

Pyro 3 grains
Water 3 fld. ozs.
Pot Bichromate
(half a grain per fld. oz) 5 minims

gives Reddish Sepia or with 10 minims Bichromate:- Brown.

The above will do for a start, if you want any more , please ask,
I also have formulae for toning collodian P.O.P, Albumen paper etc.
Alex.
PS Those who disagree with any of the above formulae should take it up
