Gum Sandarac is used to create a varnish for Ambrotype images. This natural product is the hardened sap “tears” of the African Sandarac tree. It contains bits of tree bark, seeds, insects and anything that happens to traverse the savannah. Grind with a mortar and pestle to make dissolving in alcohol easier.
